Lake State This Week for March 29, 2004

Here's some of what's going on this week. Get more information at

The Lake State Theatre Company and Drama Club performers will present "The 
Fantasticks" April 1-4 this week in the Brady Hall Studio Theater.
Catch Broadway's longest running show at 7 p.m. April 1-3 or at 2 p.m. on 
April 4. Admission is free for students and staff. General admission is 
$10. Gary Balfantz is directing the production and Karen Hughes is 
providing the music direction.
The show is presented through special arrangements with Music Theatre 
International in New York, which provided and authorized performance materials.
The program is sponsored by the Lake State Theatre Company and Drama Club, 
School of English and Communication, School of History and Humanities and 
College of Extended Learning.

Congratulations to Donna White, School of Education, and Colleen Rye, 
Purchasing, who were announced as LSSU's Employees of the Year during a 
full house at Saturday's Retirement and Service Awards Banquet. The program 
also honored retirees Ray Adams of the School of Engineering and 
Technology; Doug Atkinson, Physical Plant: Ken Bartlett, Physical Plant; 
Tom Bugbee, Administration and Board of Trustees; Janina Gutowska, School 
of Mathematics and Computer Science; Mieczyslaw Gutowski, Mathematics and 
Computer Science; Mike Hoholik, Physical Plant; Pat Manor, Security; Jim 
McCall, Physical Plant; Russ McCall, Physical Plant; Steve Person, School 
of Biological Sciences; Jeanne Rigotti, Cisler Center; Pat Roe, Financial 
Aid; Tim Sawyer, School of Social Sciences and Art Smart, Physical Plant.
Twenty-year Award recipients included: Tom Allan, Biological Sciences; Paul 
Duesing, Engineering and Technology; Patty Kelly, Health Care Center; 
Mieczyslaw Gutowski, Mathematics and Computer Science; Jim Madden, Criminal 
Justice and Tom Schirer, School of History and Humanities.
Ten-year Award recipients included: Frank Anzalone, Athletics; Barbara 
Evans, Biological Sciences and Mark Jastorff, Administration.

Roll up your sleeve for the blood drive from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday 
in the Cisler Center. Photo ID or donor card required. The drive is 
sponsored by the LSSU Student Nurses Association, Alpha Theta Omega, Tau 
Kappa Epsilon and Sigma Lambda. Call 440-3147 for more information.

Join your friends for Lake State After Hours at 5 p.m. on Thursday at 
Moloney's Alley. Gary Kay and Century 21 sponsor this month's event. 
Munchies and refreshments provided. Lake State After Hours is held on the 
first Thursday of every month.

Friday is Occupational Education Career Day at LSSU. Eleventh grade 
students from local high schools will be on campus to find out what LSSU

Come meet the English Club on Saturday by joining the members for dinner at 
the Great Wall at 7 p.m. Students are welcome to join and find out more 
about the club. Feel free to bring a poem to read. Cost for dinner for 
students is $5 and it's $12.50 for non-students. Seating is limited to 30 
people. Get tickets from Lance Rivers, ext. 2116.

The Board of Trustees will meet on campus on Sunday and Monday, April 4-5. 
The membership will have evening committee meetings on Sunday, then a 
public session at 9 a.m. on Monday in the Cisler Center. For more

         An inventory reduction sale is now in progress at the Campus 
Shoppe and Superior Sports Pro Shop. Save as much as 30 percent storewide.

The Campus Shoppe is also collecting information for its 2004-2005 Campus 
Planner and Datebook. The annual publication includes information and dates 
of special interest to students, faculty, and staff. Amber Wilton is 
organizing the info and would like to include the schedules and important 
dates of all LSSU departments, clubs, or associations. She mentions that 
the student handbook is no longer a part of the planner. Submit all 
schedules and calendar information to Amber by April 15. Contact her at

More on the Campus Shoppe: Effective July 1, LSSU will begin a partnership 
with Barnes & Noble as the lease operator for the Campus Shoppe. Barnes & 
Noble manages approximately 500 campus bookstores throughout the United 
States, providing excellent service, quality products, competitive pricing, 
and on-site management.
Representatives of Barnes & Noble will host a meet and greet session from 
10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, in the Cisler Center. Students, staff 
and community are invited to meet Paula Eardley, vice president of campus 
relations, Chris Peterson, regional director and Vince Battista regional 
manager. They will be available to address any issues and offer information 
regarding overall enhancements and advantages that a Barnes & Noble college 
bookstore can bring to our campus. Refreshments will be provided 
compliments of Barnes & Noble.

The Registrar's Office said you can check out the summer class offerings

the "available course selections" button.

Student Alumni Involved for Lake State (SAILS) honored staff who have made 
the biggest difference in their personal success at Lake State in the last 
year during the second annual Golden Anchor celebration on Thursday, March 
25. Those being honored included Paulette Attie, Ron Schott, Kari Jastorff, 
Jennifer MacIntyre, Nora Izzard, Randy Suggitt, Kathy Marchand, Charlotte 
Amaro, Tom Coates, Suzette Olson, Heather Ferguson, Sherry Duesing, Vicki 
Fox, Robert Money, James Moody, Deb Rynberg, Drew Ludtke, Holly Johnson and 
Mark Jastorff.

Alumna Jennifer (Bellant) Donner wants you to know about a new Lake State 
alumni listserv that she started recently on the web in Yahoo. It's open to

         This week is the last week to catch "Color and Light," an exhibit 
by local artist Maureen Mousley in the Shouldice Library. Mousley graduated 
from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a bachelor's degree 
in fine arts. The award-winning artist teaches Introduction to Painting and 
Mixed Media Explorations at LSSU and has taught in the Sault, Brimley and 
Ojibwe Charter School Districts. Mousley is an active member of the Sault 
Area Arts Council, previously serving as secretary and vice-chair. Her 
awards are many, including: Sault Summer Arts Festival Design Award 1988; 
Sault Summer Fine Arts Award 1994, 1995, 2000; Sault Summer Arts Festival 
Best Painting Award 1992, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003; Sault Summer Arts 
Festival Best of Show Award 1994; Algoma Festival of Arts Best Painting 
Award 1999, 2000; Crooked Tree Arts Center Fine Arts and Crafts Exhibition, 
Fine Arts Division Honorable Mention, 2000; first place in "On the 
Waterfront," Sault Area Arts Council juried competition 2001; and third 
place in "Off the Deep End," Sault Area Arts Council juried competition 2002.

The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA) requires LSSU to 
inform its subscribers in Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan that 
mastectomies are eligible health expenses. Along with mastectomies, LSSU's 
coverage provides for reconstructive surgery or other related services 
following the mastectomy. This notice meets the annual notice requirement.

LSSU SPORTS THIS WEEK
The LSSU Track team needs volunteers to work high school track meets from 
5-8 p.m. on Wednesday this week and again on April 15. The team is also 
interested in having people with track and field experience to assist with 
some event areas for the team. The team set 26 school records last year and 
has eight school records so far this year. Coach Drew Ludtke said the team 
is looking to make more improvements, but needs some help. For more

Men's tennis is in Midland playing Northwood at 1 p.m. on Saturday and in 
Detroit playing Wayne State at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Women's softball is in Erie, Penn. for a few days, playing Gannon at 6 and 
7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Mercyhurst at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
